밤새도록 고기 굽고 술 마시며 고성방가를 서슴지 않는 사람도 간혹 있긴 하지만, 백패커는 대부분 개머리언덕의 바람과 풍경을 조용히 즐기다 흔적 하나 남기지 않고 발길을 되돌린다. 굴업도를 찾는 백패커가 여러 불편함을 기꺼이 감수하면서까지 이곳에 텐트를 치는 이유도 그 때문이다. 밤하늘을 수놓은 은하수와 밤바다에 점점이 떠 있는 어화(漁火)까지도 온전히 나만의 것으로 누릴 수 있다. 마을과 가까운 데다, 넓고 단단한 백사장을 따라 울창한 솔숲이 형성돼 있다.
